Can Myanmar return to democracy?

Can Myanmar return to democracy?

Myanmar’s military staged a coup on Monday and detained the head of the government, Aung San Suu Kyi, and leaders of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party that won a landslide election victory in November.

A state of emergency has now been declared in the country.

The NLD is urging supporters to protest, as world leaders condemn the power grab as an assault on democracy.

The army says it will organise new elections in a year.

But can the army be trusted? And is this the end of Myanmar’s 10-year journey to democracy?

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom

Guests:

Maung Zarni – Myanmar human rights activist and co-founder of Forces of Renewal for Southeast Asia

Phil Robertson – Deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch

Ronan Lee – Visiting scholar at Queen Mary University of London and author of Myanmar’s Rohingya Genocide
