Can I vote without my polling card or ID and do I need to bring a pen?

Voting has already started taking place today, with the polls having opened at 7am sharp.

People have until 10pm tonight to vote which should hopefully give people enough time finish their work and head on down to their local polling station.

But don't wait up for the results as they won't start getting counted until around 9am tomorrow (May 6) with results expected in the afternoon and throughout the rest of Friday evening.

This year, rather than putting an X in the box by the person who you want to elect, you'll instead be asked to enter numbers beside their names with one being your top choice.

But before you can vote, here's everything you should know before you head to the polls...

Where is my polling station?

You can find your local polling station by entering your postcode here.

You cannot vote at any other station.

Do I need to bring my polling card or ID with me?

If you're registered to vote but you don't have your poll card, you can go to the polling station and give them your name and address and you won't need to show any ID.

Can I bring my own pen with me when voting?

Yes - and with covid spreading many people may opt to do so.

It doesn't matter what kind of writing implement you use as long as you make sure your voting intention is clear.

I have Covid - can someone vote for me?

Sadly the deadline has now passed to apply for a postal vote, or a proxy vote meaning someone will vote on your behalf.

But thankfully you can now apply for an emergency proxy vote if since the deadline one of the following has happened:

  • A medical emergency
  • You are away for work
  • You're self-isolating because of covid

The deadline for the emergency vote closes at 5pm (May 5) and you can get them by by contacting your local council.

Who can I vote for in my local election?

Each ward will differ but you can check your specific one here and have a read up on who you can vote for before you head down.

Can my dog come with me?

Animals are not allowed in polling stations however they can stay outside - where they're often pictured.

However assistance dogs are an exception.

Is it illegal to not vote?

No. If you decided not to vote that choice is up to you.
