Can I visit Wales from England? Welsh Government announces new travel rules

The Welsh government has revealed its latest travel rules to come into force following the end of England's lockdown.

The coronavirus regulations banning all but essential travel between England and Wales have now been partially lifted.

People from England and Scotland will now be able to travel into Wales from tier one and two areas from 6pm on  December 4.  They will also be able to take a holiday too.

But the new regulations ban travel to and from Tier 3 areas - including Greater Manchester.

In Scotland people cannot travel from Wales to Level 3 or Level 4 areas of the country - while all of Northern Ireland is also barred from entering following their new national lockdown.

However the Welsh Government said it still strongly advised people not to travel to other parts of the UK to help control the spread of Covid-19.

All travel restrictions within the UK will be suspended between 23 and 27 December to allow people to meet members of their Christmas bubble.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “There will be no restrictions on travel within Wales but we need to have some restrictions on travel across the border to those parts of the UK where infection rates are high to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“We are also advising people in Wales not to travel into those parts of England and Scotland where the infection rate is lower, to help prevent them taking coronavirus with them.”

“Coronavirus doesn’t respect borders – we all have a part to play in keeping Wales and the UK safe. Please think carefully about where you are going and what you are doing. This virus thrives wherever we come together with others.”

“Taken together with our other measures, these travel restrictions will help to keep us all safe.”

It is expected the new travel restrictions will remain in place until at least January 2021, with the Welsh Government vowing to review

The latest regulations mean some people in Wales will be allowed to visit areas across the border for the first time since September.
