Can I travel out of the North East to stay with family at Christmas now we're in Tier 3?

Travel outside the region is now subject to strict rules as the North East enters Tier 3.

With December fast approaching, many people may have been hoping to spend some of the festive season with loved ones in other parts of the country.

But the new Covid-19 rules may put paid to some people's plans.

When national lockdown ends on December 2, people will still be told not to leave the North East - and they'll be banned from meeting people they don't live with indoors in any part of the country (not just this region).

Under the top Tier of rules, although people can continue to travel to venues or amenities which are open, we're told to "aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible".

People should also avoid travelling to other parts of the UK, including for overnight stays, unless it's absolutely necessary.

Exemptions include journeys for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities.

Of course, these rules are still set to be lifted in the immediate Christmas period.

Under the government's eased Christmas rules, from December 23 until December 27 people will be allowed to leave their local area and travel to any part of the UK, regardless of what tier it was previously in.

They'll be able to stay overnight and spend time indoors with up to two other households.

The new Tier 3 rules won't get in the way of that.

But, all journeys must not start before December 23 and you must be home on December 27 at the latest - otherwise you'll be breaking the rules, if the region is still in the highest tier at that point.
