Can I stop the PA seeing my payslip?

Why should the company PA know how much I earn? Photograph: Katherine Rose

Each Friday and Monday we publish the problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Guardian Money supplement so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy's own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

The directors of the company I work for have recently started giving their PA the payslips to put in envelopes and hand out to staff. I am not very happy about this as she has only worked for the company for a short time and is now privy to what we all earn as well as knowing our confidential details.

Would I be within my rights to say I do not want this lady looking at my private details or shall I have to put up with it? I know some of the other members of staff are also concerned.

• For Jeremy's and readers' advice on a work issue, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@guardian.co.uk. Please note that he is unable to answer questions of a legal nature or reply personally.
