Can I still shop with Debenhams online in Ireland and what happens to my gift card balance?

Debenhams Ireland is going into liquidation with all 11 stores closing permanently.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, all stores were forced to shut last month which has ultimately led to this decision.

The company has stores in Dublin, Kildare, Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Cork and Waterford but the majority will all now stay closed.

The company acknowledged in a letter that these were "unprecedented times" and it is "having to make exceptionally difficult decisions".

And with the sudden news many customers have been asking a few questions as to what happens with certain aspects of their shopping.

Debenhams to shut up to 50 stores as 4,000 staff face redundancy

Here's all we know so far regarding some questions the public are asking;

Can I still shop on Debenhams online?

While shops will not reopen in all likelihood, the website is still going and you can purchase items as a lot are shipped from the UK anyway.

A spokesperson said: "Our customers in the Republic will continue to be able to shop with Debenhams online through  www.debenhams.ie."

Can I still use my gift card?

While the UK part of the business is going into administration they will still be operational as will the Irish website so a spokesperson said you will be able to use your gift card there.

However, the terms and conditions on Debenhams gift cards says that the funds are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and in the "unlikely event of the issuer of this product becoming insolvent, some funds on the card may not be available to spend.

"There is no right to cancel an online gift card order once the gift card has been spent in full or in part."

What have the company said?

Just under 1,000 people have been laid off by the company, although there is still a chance one or two shops could re-open after the pandemic.

The liquidator will make the decisions on future re-openings.

Stefaan Vansteenkiste, CEO of Debenhams, said: “We are desperately sorry not to be able to keep the Irish business operating but are faced with no alternative option in the current environment.

"This decision has not been taken lightly and is no way a reflection on our Irish colleagues, whose professionalism and commitment to serving our customers has never been in question.

"The colleagues have been placed on temporary lay-off under the Irish Government’s payment support schemes for employers and we will be working with them to support them through this process.”
