'Can I please talk to you?': Man charged with Sydney terror attack apologises to victim

The man charged with committing a terrorist act over the stabbing of his neighbour on a suburban Sydney street has called out an apology to the man he put in hospital.

Wayne Greenhalgh suffered life threatening injuries when he was stabbed by Ihsas Khan on a Minto street as he walked his dog in 2016.

A Supreme Court jury today watched a video of a police interview Mr Greenhalgh gave the day after in which he said he was lucky some of his neighbours were outside and ran over to help him.

"Lucky they were out the front or I would have been dead," he said.

After Mr Greenhalgh finished giving his evidence, Mr Khan jumped up and said "I'm so sorry for what I did to you... can I please talk to you? You're not the guy I thought you were."

Mr Khan, who has also been charged with attempted murder, admits he stabbed Mr Greenhalgh but is pleading not guilty by reason of mental illness.

Yesterday in court, the jury heard Mr Khan attacked him with a hunting knife, telling him he was going to kill him and saying: "You rape our women, you rape our children, you bomb our countries".

Mr Greenhalgh, 58, ran into a local hairdressers after the attack and when Mr Khan saw the blood on the floor he was heard to say: "what a beautiful sight this is".

The crown prosecutor said Mr Khan "wanted to be a martyr" and was heard to say "I want to die today, I'm going to die today".

The jury was told there was no dispute over what happened that day, but the real issue was what the accused's state of mind was when he did it.

Mr Khan had severe obsessive compulsive disorder at the time but the crown was set to argue that he would have known his conduct was wrong and could have controlled himself.

The crown described Mr Khan as a "self-radicalised extremist Muslim".
