Can I leave the North East to visit other regions under new local lockdown rules?

Residents of the North East are now subject to lockdown rules banning socialising with anyone they don't live with.

But what does that mean for anyone who had planned trips outside of the region?

Do new local rules still apply once you're South of Durham or North of Northumberland?

The answer is, yes, the new rules apply to all residents of the North East - even when they're visiting elsewhere.

A 'frequently asked questions' document produced by the seven local authorities involved says: "You should not visit anyone’s home inside or outside of the restricted area (except for your support bubble)."

People can still go on holiday within the UK or abroad, but they should only do this with people in their household or support bubble.

The only legally enforceable restrictions included in Thursday's announcement are the ban on meeting in private homes and gardens, as well as the new limits on the hospitality trade.

However, people have also been officially urged not to meet up in any public places, such as parks or pubs.

Residents are also advised not to attend sporting events as spectators.

Unless formally organised by a sports club or similar organisation, team sports shouldn't take place with people you don't live with. However, people can travel to play sport outside of the restricted areas.

People may visit care homes in other areas, although not ones in the North East, so long as those homes are open to visitors.

Just as within the North East, people can travel outside the area for work or school.

You can also enter other people's homes in specific circumstances, such as to facilitate a house move, to provide emergency assistance, or to visit a dying person.

The rules will be enforced from Friday 18 and will be monitored closely and reviewed on a weekly basis.
