Perplexity CEO, Aravind Srinivas, believes that Comet could redefine how people work. He also went to the extent of saying that businesses might not even need to hire additional staff.
The comment comes as Perplexity makes its Comet AI browser available to everyone after initially restricting it to its paid subscribers. It is basically an AI native alternative to Google Chrome, and the browser comes with a built-in assistant that can perform a range of on-page actions, which include summarizing web content, booking flights, and managing browser tabs via simple prompts.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Srinivas said Comet’s automation capabilities could directly translate into cost savings and higher productivity for organizations. “Instead of hiring one more person on your team, you could just use Comet to supplement all the work that you’re doing,” he said.
According to him, the productivity gains from Comet could be worth around $10,000 per user each year, as the browser allows individuals to complete more tasks in less time. Srinivas sees this as a major leap toward “delegating digital work” to AI systems, rather than expanding human teams.
He also shared a broader economic perspective, noting that if AI tools like Comet deliver even a 20 percent productivity boost, it could add up to $5 trillion to global GDP.
While Srinivas stopped short of saying AI browsers would directly lead to job cuts, his remarks echo a growing sentiment in the tech industry that AI tools are increasingly capable of replacing or reducing the need for certain roles.
