Tight end Delanie Walker was drafted by the 49ers 15 years ago and blossomed into a multi-faceted weapon.
He’ll have just turned 37 when the 49ers play their exhibition opener in August — with him possibly back in their uniform.
Walker, who spent his first seven seasons with the 49ers, will work out for them Wednesday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported. Also expected to work out is MyCole Pruitt, a former teammate of Walker’s on the Tennessee Titans, with whom Walker played seven years before sitting out last season.
The 49ers seemingly have an opening in their George Kittle-led tight end unit. Jordan Reed retired in April, and the 49ers did not draft a tight end, although they did sign undrafted free agent Josh Pederson, son of former Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson. Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner and Daniel Helm return as Kittle’s backups.
“I’ve been telling teams I’m chilling, I’m taking this time off to let my body heal, and they know what I can do,” Walker said in December on The Pat McAfee Show. “I’ll come back next year strong, faster and healthier, so that’s the plan.”
Walker had a career-high 94 receptions for 1,088 yards in 2015 en route to the first of three consecutive Pro Bowl nods with the Titans.
In other news, NFL Network reported the 49ers are adding at least one Jones to their wide receiver corps — that being Andy Jones, while trade rumors swirl about the Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones. Andy Jones’ 11 career receptions came in 2018 with the Detroit Lions.
