GURUGRAM: Students took out a rally at SGT University on Saturday urging witnesses to get their statements recorded, a day after a 24-year-old BAMS student was shot on campus. The accused, also a student of the university, in final-year law, is yet to be traced.
“Many students were present at the time of the shooting. All of them are witnesses. Their statements are crucial to getting the accused convicted,” said one of those who participated in the rally.
Vinit, a final-year student of ayurvedic medicine and surgery, was shot in the abdomen at the parking lot during an argument with Lucky on Friday. Since it was lunch break, there were many students in the vicinity. Lucky was with three others when they allegedly attacked Vinit. All four have been booked for murder.
The dispute between Vinit and Lucky goes back at least six months, police have learnt. Vinit, who was from Shamli in UP, would stay with his maternal uncles in Delhi, but had taken a room in the university hostel last year. Police have learnt that Vinit and Lucky had a dispute over their ties with a final-year BSc student who apparently was Vinit’s girlfriend till about six months ago. After the breakup, the two had, however, stayed in touch, police sources said.
When Lucky started talking to her a few months ago, it led to hostility between him and Vinit, police have learnt. The two had even come to blows earlier, sources said, but other students had intervened.
During a recent phone conversation, Vinit had allegedly told her something about Lucky. When she confronted Lucky about it, he was infuriated. That, according to police, was the flash point in the dispute between the two boys. “It is hard to believe that a student killed another student from the same college over their friendship with a woman,” said Alok, Vinit’s maternal uncle.
He said Vinit had never shared with his family anything about his friendship with the BSc student or his dispute with Lucky. Vinit had recently visited his home in Shamli, but his family had no inkling about what was happening in his college. “He never shared anything about it with his family. Before moving to the hostel last year, Vinit would stay with us in Delhi,” said Alok.
Alok and another maternal uncle of Vinit collected his body after the autopsy. Vinit’s father, a pharmacist in Shamli, is in a state of shock and could not come to Gurugram. “We want to know everything about the case. We want to know what led to his murder,” said Alok.
The police have directed the university management to enhance security arrangements on the campus and ensure no one is allowed inside the compound without showing ID. Visitors will be issued passes. Questions have been raised over how a student could make his way inside the varsity compound with a gun in pocket.
DCP (west) Deepak Saharan said several teams were working on the case. “The accused will be arrested soon. All educational institutes have been asked to enhance security arrangements,” the DCP said.
