Campsites in the countryside and on the coast within an hour's drive of Newcastle

You don't have to go very far away to get away from it all and enjoy a few nights camped out under the stars.

Within an hour or so of Newcastle, you could pitch up at a campsite by a quiet beach, in the hills or close to an idyllic village.

Whether you're a seasoned camper, or want to try it for the first time, there  are plenty of options not too far from home.

Beadnell Bay

Even by Northumberland's standards, Beadnell Bay is stunning.

Beadnell Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site is situated right next to the beach, and is handy for days out to Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and Alnwick.

Dunstan Hill

Another option by the coast is Dunstan Hill, which is south of Beadnell, close to Craster and Low Newton.

Facilities include showers, toilets and electric hook ups. Both tents and caravans are welcome.

River Breamish

This camp site sits between weaving streams in the Cheviot Hills, and is a  25 minute drive from Alwnick.

There are trails and guided walks in the nearby Northumberland National Park.

The camp site's owners describe River Breamish as "the perfect outdoor escape for anyone looking for a peaceful yet adventurous getaway".

Bellingham

This camp site is a great option if you're keen on outdoor sports, with Kielder not too far away.

Bellingham also close to Hadrian's Wall, Hareshaw Linn and Hexham, while the village itself has pubs and places to eat too.

The campsite itself is roughly a 20 minute walk from the village.

Barnard Castle

This campsite is handy for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and Teesdale.

High Force waterfall is nearby, as are Balderhead and Hury reservoir, which are popular for fiishing.
