Campsites can re-open across Wales today

Campsites across Wales are re-opening from today following months of closure because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Getting back to nature and gathering with friends and family around a campfire is a staple of the British summer, even if it's pouring with rain, and now people can continue this great tradition in Wales.

The Welsh Government gave the green light for campsites to re-open from Saturday, July 25, a move welcomed by site owners who were keen to take advantage of what's left of the season and recoup loses from being closed during the coronavirus lockdown.

Campsite owners in Wales have been busy preparing for the anticipated announcement that they can re-open. Self-contained accommodation, including static caravans, opened on July 11 but the owners of campsites with shared facilities have had to wait longer for the go-ahead.

Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants re-opened outdoors on July 13 as did indoor tourist attractions.

Campsites in Gower, recently named the best destination in the UK for a staycation with good social distancing, are amongst those making preparations to re-open this weekend

Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park in Penmaen will operate at 15% capacity at first with up to 110 tents accommodated from Saturday.

Skysea Caravan & Camping Site in Gower is re-opening its shared toilet and shower block today and asking people not to mix with those from other camping or caravan units.

Safety and infection control measures including protective screens, hand sanitiser stations, social distancing signs and increased frequency of cleaning have been put in place at campsites to reassure holidaymakers and comply with regulations.

The latest Welsh Government guidelines on mixing more than two households still apply at campsites and some campsites are asking that households do not mix at all.

People are advised to book well in advance of their trip, with some campsites already fully booked until September, and to check what the restrictions are at specific sites before booking.

The opening coincides with the return of another Gower regular - the Rhossili sunflower fields.

This year they'll look a little different with six different colours of sunflower and a 'pick your own field', as well as food being showcased from Gower suppliers.

It comes as Natural Resources Wales has appealed for people to camp legally and respectfully.

There has been a reported rise in 'wild camping' during lockdown (Natural Resources Wales)

There has been an increase in 'wild camping,' where people are illegally camping on private land and sometimes leaving rubbish, including tents, behind.

There have also been reports of increased anti-social behaviour linked to 'wild camping'.
