Campervans could be charged up to £15 a day to park in Wirral beauty spots in new council plans

People parking up in motor homes at Wirral beauty spots could be charged up to £15 a day in new measures to be discussed by Wirral council next week.

The proposal is part of a package of measures on the table at a meeting of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee at Wirral council on Monday as a way of generating the £1million in extra car parking revenue agreed at a previous council budget meeting.

In a report produced ahead of the meeting, which lists tariff increases, a new borough-wide standardised tariff system, as well as the introduction of new on and off street charged parking spaces at towns and coastal areas across the borough, an idea to charge for those with motorhomes is also on the table.

The report states: "Members are also recommended to consider the introduction of a new motorhome daily parking tariff where appropriate on certain car parks.

"A motorhome is typically a motor vehicle equipped with some of the amenities of home e.g. cooker, fridge, toilet, sleeping facilities etc.

"These types of vehicles can often take up more than one standard car parking space, therefore a tariff of up a maximum of £15 per day for motorhome vehicle parking is anticipated.

"The Councils commercial team is developing options for the overnight parking of motorhomes and leisure vehicles at a dedicated commercial location with provision for facilities.

"This is subject to separate ongoing discussions with the members of The Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee."

Earlier this week, the ECHO reported on details of the council's car parking options report, which provoked strong reactions from local residents, as well as responses from councillors across the borough's political parties.

Some comments on social media suggested that motorhome parking charges would be a positive step forward.

One person said the number of motorhomes parking up at the borough's resorts was an issue affecting other visitors as well as residents alike, saying: "It has become chaos. On good weather days, visitors dump their cars on pavements & roundabouts. With the amount of motorhomes parked up on King's Parade on a semi permanent basis, day trippers in cars can't find a space to park."

Another added: "They should put facilities for the vans and charge a small fee for over night parking."
