Nearly a quarter of a century after his father made his professional debut, Campbell Hatton will do the same on the Dillian Whyte-Alexander Povetkin undercard this evening.
And the 19-year-old son of Ricky ‘the Hitman’ Hatton is all too aware of living up to an illustrious surname in boxing circles when he steps into the ring for four rounds against Jesus Ruiz in Gibraltar.
“People will make comparisons but I just have to concentrate and go in there and do what I can do,” he said. “My dad had such a great career and I want to do the same myself but it’s not going to happen overnight.
“I’ve got time on my side and you don’t need to rush things, we can do it professionally and we just have to be patient. My dad was exciting and I do believe I will bring some excitement but realistically I’ve got to learn my game first.”
There was never, it seems, a consideration for Hatton Jr to take an under-the-radar fight away from the spotlight.
But he is relishing the opportunity having known boxing his entire life - he’s had his nappy changed in the ring but did not take up the sport properly until the age of 14.
Lockdown pushed him, he says, to move into the professional ranks a little sooner than he might have liked with amateur opportunities limited.
And he readily admits he will feel the jitters before that first pro bout. He told ESPN: “I will be nervous, no doubt. It will be one of the biggest days of my life but I’ve got to keep that little bit of composure.
“And people who liked watching my dad will see there are similarities with me. I’ve got a high work rate, good body punches and I’m very aggressive but I like to pick my shots as well.”
When is Campbell Hatton fighting?
This super featherweight bout fight is up on the Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin undercard on Saturday, March 27.
The ring walk is expected at around 6.30pm UK time.
