Campaigning Sambrook wins Paul Foot award

Freelance journalist Clare Sambrook won the Paul Foot Award 2010, accepting her £5,000 prize last night.

She was chosen for her campaigning and investigative work into the plight of the children of asylum seekers, who are often separated from their parents and locked up.

The prolific Sambrook has been published by openDemocracy.net, The Guardian and Private Eye and many other titles too. (See End Child Detention Now).

There was recognition too for another prolific journalist, Eamonn McCann. He was given a special lifetime campaign award for his campaigning journalism on behalf of the victims of Bloody Sunday.

As I noted in my London Evening Standard column last week, there was a particularly strong shortlist selected from a very strong long list.

The chairman of the judges, Brian MacArthur, said they could have compiled at least two more shortlists of roughly equivalent quality from almost 50 entries.
