Campaigners slam watchdog after Viagogo court battle abandoned

Campaigners have slammed a watchdog for abandoning its legal crackdown on rogue ticketing site Viagogo.

The Competition and Markets Authority promised tough action after thousands of music fans were ripped off by touts on the site.

But the CMA yesterday announced it is suspending action at the High Court in London after Viagogo tinkered with its site.

Ticketing investigator Reg Walker said: “Years after we were told the CMA would be investigating Viagogo, we still do not have a single prosecution.”

Sharon Hodgson MP, co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group on ticket abuse, said: “Viagogo is not fully compliant with the Consumer Rights Act.

“Viagogo has made vanity changes which can easily be reversed now that the CMA has taken off the pressure.”

The watchdog said its hands were tied by ticketing laws but chief executive Andrea Coscelli insisted: “The Viagogo website UK customers now visit is worlds apart from the one they faced before the CMA took action.”

A Viagogo spokesman said it had strived at all times to ensure it was correctly applying the CMA order.
