Campaigners holding day of action to protest south side library closures

South side residents have organised a day of action in response to the ongoing closure of their local libraries.

Govanhill, Langside and Pollokshields are yet to reopen after being closed as part of the first coronavirus lockdown.

The Save Our Libraries campaigners have been holding peaceful read-ins every Saturday morning outside the Pollokshields library.

Their online day of action on November 28 will mark 40 weeks of closure for the Pollokshields branch.

The group have raised concerns that the libraries might not open when restrictions are eased across the city.

A petition calling for Glasgow Life to reconsider their decision to keep the libraries closed has attracted more than 7,000 signatures.

Supporter Kate Cotter explained: "The Save our Libraries campaigns across the south side are deeply concerned by the lack of any clear schedule for re-openings for so many libraries especially ones whose Equalities Impact Assessments highlight that these closures would disadvantage communities affected.

"So when will our libraries re-open, will they definitely re-open. Our councillors have made vaguely supportive noises but Glasgow Life have remained careful to avoid any direct confirmation that the libraries will reopen in 2021. We love our libraries, people everywhere who love libraries are supportive."

Glasgow Life have been working with Glasgow City Council to 'review and prioritise' which venues and services can reopen but previously said it was unlikely that services that haven't already been outlined will be opening in the near future.
