Campaigners fear battle 'almost lost' as plans lodged for development beside South Dublin school

Campaigners say they feel "despondent" about plans to build a new housing development overlooking a school in south Dublin.

Lands beside Our Lady's Grove Primary and Secondary Schools on the Goatstown Road were sold by the Congregation of the Religious of Jesus and Mary in May 2017 for an estimated €13m.

Plans have now been lodged by Durkan Estates to build a Strategic Housing Development consisting of 132 units on the land.

The plan includes three five-storey apartment buildings.

A five-storey block nearby, that is not part of the new application, is nearing completion.

Local group Our Lady's Grove - Save Our Land told Dublin Live they are concerned about losing green space and playing fields around the only non-fee paying schools in the area.

A spokeswoman for the group said: "Also of huge concern then and now, is the safety of our children during the build and subsequently, with the impact this development will have on traffic."

The group have been fighting the development for two years but fear they have "almost lost" now that the plan has been submitted to An Bord Pleanala.

The spokeswoman added: "They're so eager to provide housing at any cost.

"Mostly it's high return apartments, which don't suit the regular families that are struggling to find family homes in the suburbs.

"We hope we have a chance of reducing the density of the development.

"The greed is just astounding. From all sides. Firstly the religious order that sold this land, which should have been kept for community/school use.

"Then the developer building high density five-storey apartments 7km from the city centre in a leafy, residential neighbourhood largely consisting of low-density, family housing."

A decision on the plan is due to be decided by Thursday, August 29.

Dublin Live have contacted Durkan Estates for comment.
