Campaigner Vicky Phelan gives update on her cancer diagnosis as she seeks treatment in US

CervicalCheck campaigner Vicky Phelan has said she is seeking to take part in a medical trial in the United States in a bid to further treat her cancer.

The brave mother of two earlier revealed that her cancer had once again returned after a new tumour developed in her lung.

And now she has said that she is seeking alternative treatment in America which would see her moving stateside for a number of months should she be accepted to the trial.

Vicky also said that she would be 'first in the queue' to take a Covid-19 vaccine should one be approved.

Speaking in an interview on Claire Byrne Live on RTE she said: "I certainly would be one of the first in the queue for the Covid vaccine when it comes in because I know I'm in a situation with my cancer that I'm having to try drugs that are untested.

Unfortunately my oncologist recommended when it was quite obvious my tumours were growing back that chemotherapy would be the next step and I resisted that because I would like to try something else. It's as simple as that.

She added that since she has seen big success in the use of the drug Pembro which she campaigned vigorously for throughout her cancer diagnosis she would like to try another immunotherapy drug rather than go through gruelling chemotherapy.

"I'm a bit of a risk taker. I'm looking at a clinical trial at the moment. Unfortunately there's nothing here in Ireland. So I'm looking at a trial in the states at the moment and that's where I could be going next year."

"I would have to go there for a minimum of six months. I've already been in touch with the oncologist and research nurse that's leading this trial.

"They've got some really good success with this drug for patients like me who have been on Pembro. Over 50% of patients that he has that have been on Pembro have had a reduction in their tumours so that does sound positive."
