Campaigner's fears for ambulances caught up in Dumbarton and Alexandria roadworks

Nightmare roadworks causing traffic misery across Dumbarton and Alexandria are putting emergency services under unnecessary pressure, according to a local health campaigner.

Former GMB officer Mick Conroy says the congestion caused by current works taking place in Balloch, Alexandria and Dumbarton are putting the emergency services under extra strain.

Regeneration works in Balloch are causing travel misery for residents due to traffic congestion and temporary lights while the work to narrow Balloch Road is completed.

Drivers are also facing further disruption in Dumbarton after it was revealed last week that works to the rail bridge over Townend Road could last until May.

Temporary lights have now been installed in Dumbarton East, adding to the congestion.

The list of ongoing works across the authority have been branded “concerning” by Mr Conroy, who says emergency services are being faced with severe congestion no matter where they go in the area.

He said: “If an ambulance has to leave the hospital, no matter what way they go they are going to be caught in roadworks.

“It is the emergency vehicles that will suffer. They are under pressure as it is without having to struggle to get through the traffic at multiple areas across West Dunbartonshire.

“There is a concern about the roadworks in the area causing difficulties for ambulances and other emergency service vehicles.

“Especially in Balloch, we are coming up to a busy period right now and when you think of how many people come to the area during Easter and the summer it’s going to be a nightmare for them to get through.”

Mr Conroy also blasted works in Alexandria which blocked the entrance to the Vale of Leven Hospital last week.

The temporary lights on North Main Street and Luss Road were in place while Scottish Power Energy Networks replaced underground electricity cables.

The three-way traffic system prevented cars turning left into the Alexandria Hospital, which Mr Conroy said was “ridiculous.”

He added: “I thought it was the stupidest thing I have ever seen.

“There was a sign that said no entry to the Vale of Leven Hospital. There was no left turn.

“Granted if there was an emergency and there was an ambulance they would just go through it but if it was someone who didn’t know the area they would have to go all the way up to Balloch roundabout and turn round and come back.”

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “We are unaware of any issues of this nature and the emergency services have not raised any concerns.

“During any road works, we liaise closely with these services to ensure that access for emergency vehicles is maintained and prioritised.”
