Campaign to save popular Arnold chip shop threatened by proposed demolition

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for the proposed demolition of a well-loved chip shop to be rejected.

Proposals for 135-141 Front Street in Arnold have been submitted to Gedling Borough Council which would see nine one or two-bedroom apartments created as well as a ground level commercial unit - which would be built after the demolition of four high street shops.

One such shop is Blue Circles Fish Bar, a family run business which has been there since 1990.

The business is one of those which could be forced to move if plans are approved, something which its owner says will leave him "absolutely gutted".

However, a petition calling on the shop to be saved has now gained more than 1,400 signatures in the past week.

Maureen Lane, who started the petition, wrote: "Blue Circle has been serving our community the best fish and chips by the same family for many years - the current owner took over from his father.

"There are other businesses being forced to close to make room for apartments, not what Arnold's Front Street needs - it is our main shopping street. Please sign and share."

Owner Bambos Charalambous, 50, previously told Nottinghamshire Live: "I would be absolutely gutted if we had to move.

"I have nothing else, my family and me have put an incredible amount of work and effort into running this business, from this shop.

"We've ran this shop since 1990, my dad owned it, then my uncle and then I bought into the business. I have 15 kids and most of them have worked here or would have worked here in the future.

"It's really surprised me, we didn't know until recently when everyone else found out, I have no idea what is going to happen next.

"It would be a shame to have to move from a place where we have so many memories and have put in everything, we don't know if we'll be able to stay.

"And I think, or at least hope, that Arnold would not be happy with it either if we move out of Front Street."

The application, submitted by Michael Zucker, is currently pending review by the council.

Gedling Borough Council has been approached for comment.
