Campaign to save backyard pumptrack built for west end community during lockdown

A campaign has been launched to save a backyard pumptrack built to serve the west end community during lockdown.

Ramsay MacFarlane, who lives in Kelvindale and works at Trail Coach, created the circuit of rollers and banked turns in his back garden in May so riders of all ages in the area could get socially distanced exercise.

But the future of the new play area is now in doubt as he claims Glasgow City Council has indicated to him that they want to impose planning regulations to reinstate the grass lawn.

He said: "All the hard work could be lost and all the joy it has created could be undone if we don't save the pumptrack!

"I am unaware of any complaints - neighbours have been resoundingly supportive and have even joined in themselves.

"We need to show how much benefit the pumptrack has brought to the local community, particularly during lockdown, where social distancing in the city was virtually impossible.

"Everyone needs some fresh air and exercise - I was proud to be able to provide that for locals who perhaps don't have a garden or somewhere to play.

"If we make a great case, perhaps we'll be allowed to keep it going and you never know, it might be incredibly useful during another lockdown period."

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "Following a number of concerns raised relating to the creation of bike track in a residential back court area,  our planning officers have been in touch and indicated that the development carried out requires planning permission and that this is unlikely to be forthcoming. The expectation is that the backcourt be restored.”

In the meantime, riders can still have a go for free but have the option to donate to local causes. All the money raised goes towards Glasgow’s Common Weal.
