Campaign to bring state-of-the-art skateboard facility to Valleys park

A campaign to bring a state of the art skateboard facility to a Valleys park is making good progress.

Friends of Tyn y Bryn park hope to secure £200,000 in funding for a new skate park in Tonyrefail.

The plans have been in the works for a number of years and were started by councillor Danny Grehan in 2017.

He said the group were getting closer to making the dream a reality and are in the final stages of securing lottery funding to cover the costs of the park and have already secured an agreement with the council for a community asset transfer to the group.

"We had a public meeting to decide what was wanted for young people in Tonyrefail and the one key idea that came up was a skate park," said Cllr Grehan, Plaid Cymru councillor for Tonyrefail East.

"We just recognised that there was a need for something in the area for young people and we asked them what they wanted too and this is what they came up with."

A committee was set up to start fundraising and campaigning for the skate park as well as an outdoor gym.

The cost of the skate park is set to come in at £200,000 and the outdoor gym a further £50,000.

The group are in the final stages of applying for lottery funding and should know if they have been successful some time in October.

"It all sort of stopped when Covid happened so we haven't made much progress in the last year but things are finally starting to take shape," Cllr Gehan added.

The committee are inviting people to share their views on the plans. What do you think of them? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
