Campaign launched to bring home man who suffered brain damage on holiday in Spain

Over €13,000 has been raised by a community to help bring a young man home to Ireland following a terrifying health turn while on holiday.

Kyle Dunne was visiting Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, when a series of serious complications led to “irreversible brain damage”. His family and friends are now rallying to bring him home and give him the send-off that he deserves when the time comes.

Kyle experienced complications with diabetes during the trip, which led to seizures and a heart attack. His brain was deprived of oxygen, causing brain damage to the young man. A GoFundMe page has been set up by his friend Chloe McCarthy, who wrote: “My best friend Kyle was on holiday in the Gran Canaria.

“After a brief complication with his diabetes, he endured seizures followed by a heart attack. Unfortunately, Kyle’s brain was deprived of oxygen for an extensive period of time and consequently, he suffered severe irreversible brain damage.”

The fundraiser, which is called 'Help us Bring Kyle Dunne Home', has raised over €13,300. It will also help to “eventually give him the send-off that he deserves”. More than 380 people have donated money to the fundraiser, which has a goal of €5,000. Many people who knew Kyle have left messages on the page, sharing thoughts and support for his family during this time. Organisers and donators alike are asking for the page to be shared around.

Chloe wrote on the GoFundMe: “We would be grateful for any donation big or small and we would also ask you to keep his family in your prayers.”
