Campaign for free public transport in Glasgow to launch this month

A new campaign calling for free public transport in Glasgow is to launch this month.

The 'Free Our City' campaign is calling on politicians to deliver "a world-class, fully-integrated and accessible public transport network that’s free at the point of use".

Launching on September 19, the movement is a teaming up of sees community campaigns, trade unions and the youth climate movement. Its goal is to ensure Glasgow "makes a just and green recovery from the pandemic".

A statement from the campaign reads: "Inspired by the hundreds of forward-thinking cities across the world – from Kansas to Calais – we’re demanding that our politicians deliver a world-class, fully-integrated and accessible public transport network that’s free at the point of use.

"This radical policy is now urgent and necessary to ensure our city region makes a just and green recovery from the pandemic – a recovery which addresses the climate emergency and tackles gross inequalities in our society."

The campaign will launch with an online conference, including speakers from cities around the world, sharing the benefits of free public transport.

The event will take place on Zoom with registration taking place in advance on Eventbrite.
