Camp Pendleton was placed on lockdown in the early hours of Wednesday, 30 July, after a suspicious package was discovered near its main gate. The incident prompted immediate security measures, including the closure of all entry points and nearby freeway exits, disrupting traffic and sparking concern among local residents.

The main gate, located near Harbour Drive and San Rafael Drive, is a high-traffic area along the base's perimeter. Military officials quickly shut down all gates and surrounding routes to contain the potential threat.

According to NBC San Diego, the alert began around 3 am when a man attempted to enter the base but was denied access for undisclosed reasons. He later returned and left behind a suspicious package, triggering the lockdown.

Officials Respond Quickly as Base Locks Down

Officials wasted no time in securing Camp Pendleton, closing all gates to the base in response to the threat. The California Highway Patrol also shut down nearby freeway off-ramps to Vandegrift Boulevard and Harbour Drive. These precautionary steps were taken to protect both base personnel and surrounding communities.

By 6:45 am, most gates had reopened, though the main gate remains closed until further notice. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, as delays and heavy traffic continue in the area.

Suspicious Package Under Investigation

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation, since the main gate falls under its jurisdiction. Officials are working closely with the Oceanside Police Department to determine the contents of the suspicious package and identify the individual who left it behind.

Authorities have withheld specific details about the package to prevent unnecessary panic. Law enforcement continues to search for the suspect, with public safety remaining the top priority.

What Nearby Residents Should Know

Camp Pendleton, the largest Marine Corps base on the West Coast, borders civilian communities in northern San Diego County, including areas of Oceanside. Because of this proximity, the lockdown and ongoing investigation may affect local residents and commuters.

Residents are urged to remain alert and follow all official guidance. Avoid the affected zones, use designated detour routes, and do not approach any suspicious objects.

Authorities strongly advise the public to report anything unusual to the police. If the situation escalates, be prepared to follow emergency instructions, including evacuation or shelter-in-place orders.

Traffic disruptions near the base are likely to persist as the investigation continues. Camp Pendleton officials and local law enforcement are providing regular updates through official websites and news outlets.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take precautions while authorities work to resolve the threat.
