Camilla sends message of support to families caring for terminally ill children

The Duchess of Cornwall has sent a message of support to families caring for terminally ill babies, children and young people.

Camilla said those facing “enormous, heart-breaking challenges” were in her thoughts and prayers in comments to mark Children’s Hospice Week.

The duchess is patron of Children’s Hospice South West, Helen & Douglas House, and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity for seriously ill children, while Charles, the Prince of Wales, is patron of Ty Hafan.

Her message read: “Once again, it is Children’s Hospice Week, so I wanted to send a message to all the families across the country who are caring for terminally ill babies, children and young people.

“You face enormous, heart-breaking challenges and you are much in my thoughts and prayers.

“I also wanted to thank the brilliant staff and volunteers who work wonders to help short lives to be lived to the full, creating precious memories and providing comfort and support to all those who come through your doors.”

Her comments came after Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, similarly praised hospice staff for their "remarkable" and "life-changing" work this morning.

She said: "Children's hospices are a lifeline, and I have been privileged to see first-hand the remarkable work they do.

"They give families the care and time they need to make treasured lifelong memories – the chance to be parents, not carers.

"Vitally, they are also there when it is time to say goodbye, making sure a family has privacy and dignity so they can grieve together, and are able to receive support for as long as they need it."

Children’s Hospice Week aims to raise awareness and funds for children’s hospice and palliative care services across the UK.

The theme this year is 'Pushed to the Limits', to reflect the difficulties faced by families who have used hospice services over the course of the coronavirus pandemic.

The week runs from June 21 to 27.
