Cameron’s best solution to the refugee crisis falls flat

Is it irony or ignorance that drives David Cameron, the apostle of “compassionate conservatism”, to observe that: “The most important thing to do is to try to bring peace and stability to that part of the world” (Cameron: we can’t take any more people fleeing from war, 3 September)? He ignores the history of one disastrous British intervention after another in Middle East affairs, including his own decision to lead the bombing of Libya – not to mention his (thus far) thwarted ambition to bomb Syria and his appetite to join delegations selling arms to the region.

• When I have a flat tyre on the motorway, I don’t need to be told by David Cameron that the solution lies in further efforts to produce tyres that do not puncture.

• David Cameron’s remarks on the refugee crisis are the rationalisation of disinclination. Of course, taking in a number of refugees fleeing from violence and persecution will not solve the problem, but what joy and life-changing opportunities it will give to those families embraced by this country.
