Jack Draper v Alexander Bublik LIVE: British No 1 stunned at French Open after Djokovic beats Norrie

Jack Draper saw his quest for a first Grand Slam come to an end as he was stunned by Alexander Bublik 7-5 3-6 2-6 4-6 to crash out of the French Open.

Cameron Norrie’s clash with Novak Djokovic ended in disappointment on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Having never before beaten the World No. 6 Norrie always faced an uphill battle and so it proved as Djokovic flew through three sets for a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory.

Earlier, Ekaterina Alexandrova was defeated in straight set by American Coco Gauff who looks to be in impressive form and native French woman Lois Boisson shocked the women’s No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula in a three set thriller.

The evening session is headlined by men’s No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner who has yet to drop a set in this campaign having swept Arthur Rinderknech, Richard Gasquet, and Jiri Lehecka aside with relative ease. Tonight’s opponent is Andrey Rublev who should pose more of a threat.

Alexander Bublik stuns Jack Draper to send British No 1 packing from Roland Garros

Emotional scenes as Alexander Bublik is in tears, overcome with the fact he’s just reached his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final.

“Sometimes in life there is only one chance and I had a feeling this was mine,” Bublik said.

“Standing here is the best moment of my life, period.

“I’m standing here like I’ve won the thing. I can’t cry here, let me be in peace! I still have a match to go, I’m a professional tennis player, I’ve got to get ready.”

Bublik gets a stroke of luck to go within a point of the quarters, hitting the top of the net with a drop shot that allows the ball to creep back in play.

The Kazakh then goes for another drop for the match - but for once, Draper gets there and beats him!

Bublik is looking nervy now - two double faults give Draper two more break points, but he is able to salvage both opportunities back to deuce.

On the baseline, Draper gives Bublik a taste of his own medicine as he floats a drop shot over the net. But Bublik is too good once again, keeping Draper running and blasting a forehand to force deuce once more.

Still this goes on!

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 4-5 Alexander Bublik*

18:24 , Will Castle

Bublik, serving for a piece of Kazakh history.

He kicks things off with an ace, but it’s Draper who lifts the crowd as he produces an UNBELIEVABLE shot. The shot looks long gone as Draper chases it towards the backboard, but the British No 1 is able to flick the risk and fire it back just over the net!

Bublik then goes long before Draper calls a correct wide to give the Brit two break points. A huge lifeline in the French Open.

But it’s two missed opportunities as a wild forehand catches the top of his racket and flies into the crowd!

We go to deuce.

18:19 , Will Castle

Draper needs to hold to stay in the French Open - and he does, relatively comfortably.

It’s now up to Bublik to keep his nerve.

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 3-5 Alexander Bublik*

18:17 , Will Castle

Same again from Bublik. Draper is staying in that same position, deep behind the baseline, and is getting caught out with the drop shot.

After falling 30-0 down, Draper is able to level the score after a moment of hesitation from Bublik - maybe the gravity of what he is close to achieving had finally dawned on him.

But he quickly composes himself, smashing an ace before securing the game.

Bublik is on the verge of doing something he said he “didn’t know” how to do: beat Jack Draper.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 3-4 Alexander Bublik

18:13 , Will Castle

Must-win service game for Draper.

After losing the first point, he gets a reprieve as a shot that Bublik perceived was long is adjudged as in by the umpire.

Bublik nets to give Draper a 40-15 advantage, and despite falling victim of another drop shot, the British No 1 is able to see out the game.

Hanging by a thread.

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 2-4 Alexander Bublik*

18:09 , Will Castle

Draper is showing that he is still in this. He needs a break and goes 0-30 up, pulling out two superb shots to put Bublik under pressure.

But from there, it’s more of the same for the Kazakh. An emphatic ace leaves Draper against the backboard, before catching the Brit out with another drop shot.

Bublik remains dominant overhead and smashes past Draper before firing a huge forehand beyond his reach. Four points in a row and Bublik holds.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 2-3 Alexander Bublik

18:04 , Will Castle

Draper goes 40-0 up and looks on course for a strong hold.

Bublik threatens to derail when he hits his THIRTY-FIRST drop shot of the game - which Draper does get to but can only net.

However, the Brit is able to blast a powerful serve to no return at 40-30 to ensure he stays within a break of Bublik.

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 1-3 Alexander Bublik*

18:01 , Will Castle

Bublik is just relentless on serve. Draper has to work for every shot, let alone every point - and at 40-15, it looks like Bublik is on his way to another simple hold.

However, the Brit is able to fightback and force deuce. Maybe he can test the nerve of Bublik here.

But no. He wrongfoots Draper twice, finishing off the game by dummying a powerful forehand and instead pulling out, you guessed it, a trademark drop.

You have to admire it!

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 1-2 Alexander Bublik

17:57 , Will Castle

Draper is still battling.

He is bringing the fight to Bublik, holding out hope that he could get carried away with this occasion. A failed drop shot shows a glimpse that could be the case.

The Brit sparks further fears that he might be about to broken again when he concedes a double fault, but he ensures he gets on the board in the fourth by pulling a page out of the Bublik book and floating a deft drop shot over the net.

Draper holds.

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 0-2 Alexander Bublik*

17:54 , Will Castle

Bublik starts his service game with a double fault. Does it throw him off? Of course it doesn’t.

He storms through the remainder of the game to another straightforward hold.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 0-1 Alexander Bublik - BREAK!

17:52 , Will Castle

Draper looks to get the fourth set off on the right foot but, still, Bublik has all the answers.

He plays the Kazakh from side to side but Bublik has no problem reaching the Brit’s backhand, firing past to take a 0-30 lead.

Bublik then pulls out another stunning drop shot, evoking a look from Draper to almost say: “Not this again.”

Then with one ferocious forehand, he returns Draper’s first serve to break to love!

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-6 Alexander Bublik* - SET!

17:45 , Will Castle

Maybe some nerves from Bublik as Draper takes it to 30-30 on defence, a rare sign of life against Bublik’s serve in this set.

However, the Kazakh ensures there is no fightback and blasts a forehand past the British No 1 to seal the set and take a very deserving lead!

This will be a real test of character for Draper.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 2-5 Alexander Bublik

17:42 , Will Castle

Another solid service game from Bublik as he goes within a game of a second set. He finishes it with an aced second serve - an indication of the confidence he’s playing with.

Draper responds by holding - a much needed reprieve for the Brit - but this set may be too far gone.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 1-4 Alexander Bublik - BREAK!

17:34 , Will Castle

Ouch. That sums up how this is going for Jack Draper.

With the score 30-40, Draper double faults and gives away his second break of the third set.

Bublik has the British No 1 on the ropes.

*Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 1-3 Alexander Bublik

17:32 , Will Castle

Draper looks rattled. He’s back on serve but he’s overpressing.

And now, Bublik has another break point.

Jack Draper 7-5 3-6 1-2 Alexander Bublik*

17:30 , Mike Jones

So Cameron Norrie has been beaten and Jack Draper is under pressure too.

Over on Court Suzanne Lenglen, he lost the second set with relative ease and Alexander Bublik has broken him already in the third.

The British No. 1 needs to regain some composure if he is to turn this match around.

The Brit is four holds of serve away from winning the set and drawing level in the match but against Djokovic none of them are guaranteed and he needs to keep his focus.

The Serb has put a hat on to guard from the sun and it’s improved his mood and play massively.

Cameron Norrie vs Novak Djokovic

Two matches down on Court Philippe Chatrier. If the next two bring the same amount of drama we’re in for a thrilling afternoon.

This is Cameron Norrie’s first time in the second week at the French Open.

Can he defy the odds and beat Novak Djokovic today?

Up next is the main event on the central court today, at least for Brits, as Cameron Norrie is about to take on Novak Djokovic.

They’ll be on court in about 10 minutes time.

Lois Boisson 3-6 6-4 6-4 Jessica Pegula

14:34 , Mike Jones

14:26 , Mike Jones

Draper on friendship with Sinner

13:48 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper says he is proud of his friendship with Jannik Sinner but knows he is getting close to challenging him on court.

“Of course, you know, we are very good friends off the court, but we practice a little bit less together, because we might know that we can face each other in the later stages of tournaments hopefully, because I always love to play against him.”

Lois Boisson 3-6 6-4 2-0 Jessica Pegula*

13:41 , Mike Jones

Boisson has been peppering the Pegula forehand which has seemingly abandoned the American at present.

It helps the French woman secure an break of serve in the first game of the third set and puts her on course for a famous win.

Boisson completes here break as well! What a result this would be if she can get over the line.

She sets up a break point with the set in the balance at 3-3 but Pegula unloads a forehand across court to move to deuce.

From there a dinky drop shot from Pegula puts her to advantage before Boisson responds to pull the match back to deuce.

Pegula is made to work for this one. The game is almost 10 minutes long but the American takes it with another fine drop shot!

Jack Draper’s ‘UFC’ regiment that has Alexander Bublik at a loss on how to beat him

13:03 , Will Castle

Alexander Bublik doesn’t know how he will be able to overcome Jack Draper after admitting intimidation at the British No 1’s fighter-like training regiment.

Draper has put the tennis world on notice across the past 12 months and will soon go to fourth in the world rankings, having surged up the charts from 40th this time last year.

He claimed his first ATP Masters title at Indian Wells earlier this year and has continued in fine stead at the French Open, taking Roland Garros by storm.

They’ll be on court following the conclusion of this game.

Lois Boisson 3-6 2-2 Jessica Pegula

12:55 , Mike Jones

The second set is a close one.

Both players are holding serve well but Boisson is challenging the Pegula serve more often.

The French woman has the backing of the crowd and has settled back into a decent bit of rhythm.

Boisson 3-6 Pegula - SET!

12:30 , Mike Jones

A comfortable first set for Jessica Pegula in the end.

She needed to work out a few things early in the set but once she learned what Lois Boisson was throwing at her she adapted perfectly.

Four games won in a row and the first set is the American’s.

Boisson 3-2 Pegula*

12:17 , Mike Jones

Boisson is put under a bit of pressure from her own serve.

Pegula moves 0-30 ahead but Boisson matches her intensity with the French woman attempting to loft the ball high and cause the bounce to be awkward for Pegula.

It works and a decision to come forward to meet a volley at the net helps take the game to deuce.

Pegula wins a break point but Boisson doubles down on aggression and saves it.

She then wins two points in a row for a deserved hold of serve.

12:08 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper’s next French Open opponent Alexander Bublik says the British star’s rise to the top is “insane”.

“Jack for me is insane. I mean, last year the guy is 40 in the world. This year he is top five in the world,” said Bublik.

Over on Court Philippe Chatrier Lois Boisson has made a superb start against Jessica Pegula.

The French woman has an early break of serve, thanks in part to her forehand, and she’s responded well to Pegula breaking her own serve in the very first game.

'I think I played great'

11:40 , Mike Jones

Coco Gauff reflected on her ‘tough’ match with Ekaterina Alexandrova but believed she brought some great tennis to the court.

She said: “Yeah, it was tough. Obviously the first set, the whole match really, I played well. She stepped up her game in the second [set].

“Some balls I thought I’d hit a good shot but she’d hit a winner on the line and if she wins like that I can keep my head up high. Overall I thought I played great.”

Alexandrova 0-6 5-7 Gauff

11:31 , Mike Jones

Gauff needs to hold serve to win. In the first rally she’s put on the defensive but a backhand to the baseline changes that.

She switches to the forehand and forces a long return from Alexandrova to win the point.

The Russian responds with a forehand down the line and lands it in play! 15-15.

An error from Alexandrova nudges Gauff back into the lead and the American moves 40-15 ahead with a blistering serve out wide.

Two match point opportunities for her here.

The first goes begging after a wide backhand is fizzed too far across the court.

The second is taken! Alexandrova goes wide off the serve and Coco Gauff wins in straight sets!

Alexandrova 0-6 5-6 Gauff* - BREAK!

11:26 , Mike Jones

Trouble for Alexandrova. A couple of poor shots puts Gauff 0-30 ahead.

The American drills a shot to Alexandrova’s backhand and the Russian knocks another out of play.

Gauff unleashes all her power to land her returns on the baseline and Alexandrova is on the back foot. She tries to got cross court but the skews the ball and loses the game.

Advantage Gauff. One hold of serve and the match is hers.

*Alexandrova 0-6 5-5 Gauff

11:24 , Mike Jones

A few double faults from Coco Gauff don’t stop her from getting the hold under the most pressure she’s been in in this match.

Her focus has never dropped though despite the resurgence from Alexandrova.

Gauff knows she’s being tested but seems up to the challenge.

Alexandrova 0-6 5-4 Gauff*

11:18 , Mike Jones

Brilliant from Alexandrova. Powerful and accurate.

Her forehand, and the power she is getting from it, is troubling Gauff and forcing more errors.

The Russian holds serve to 30 and her level is increasing all the time.

She’s one game away from forcing a deciding set.

*Alexandrova 0-6 4-4 Gauff - BREAK!

11:15 , Mike Jones

Alexandrova isn’t done yet and seems to have realised that aggression is the way to go against Gauff.

The Russian rattles off three points in a row to set up a couple of break point opportunities.

She tries to continue with her aggression but laces a backhand into the net.

Her second attempt to break back is better!

She peppers Gauff’s backhand the entire rally before switch to a forehand and smoking over a winner.

Alexandrova 0-6 3-4 Gauff* - BREAK!

11:10 , Mike Jones

This is a turning of the screw. Coco Gauff powers her way up to 15-40 and sets up a couple of break points.

The first is saved by an aggressive Alexandrova who steps up to the net having forced Gauff deep. She wins the point with a drop shot volley.

The second break point is also saved! Aggression and posivity is on the side of the Russian who wins with a forehand passing winner.

Deuce.

Gauff’s response is unreal. Unleashing all her frustration into a backhand down the line she moves to advantage before winning with a backhand!

Big break of serve.

*Alexandrova 0-6 3-3 Gauff

11:04 , Mike Jones

Both players trade points in this next game before a fine return of serve from Alexandrova lands on the baseline and Gauff lifts it out of play.

Alexandrova looks to come up the court in the following rally but Gauff whips a forehand to the far side of court and the Russian is caught on her heels. She gets to the ball but scuffs it into the net.

At 30-30 Gauff serves down the middle. She then targets Alexandrova’s backhand and the Russian finds the net.

Gauff then holds as Alexandrova pushes a backhand too wide.

Alexandrova 0-6 3-2 Gauff*

11:00 , Mike Jones

More progress for Alexandrova as Gauff’s level has dropped from the near-perfect first set.

More mistakes are creeping into the American’s game as she’s hitting her forehand a touch too long now.

Alexandrova holds to 15 and edges ahead in the second set. Can she secure a break of serve and really pile some pressure on her opponent?

*Alexandrova 0-6 2-2 Gauff

10:56 , Mike Jones

That’s a lovely shot. Gauff smokes a backhand across court and does for Alexandrova who gives up the race and lets it go.

Gauff is then put on the defensive and almost pulls off a great save but her forehand return clips the tape.

Another forehand error brings Alexandrova level at 30-30 but an ace puts Gauff back in control.

The American transitions superbly from defence to attack in the next rally but drills another forehand into the net after a 16-ball rally.

Deuce.

It’s a battle this time for Gauff to get through. Alexandrova is hitting with more power, more purpose. Gauff clings onto her hold of serve but this set is alive now and she knows it.

Alexandrova 0-6 2-1 Gauff*

10:45 , Mike Jones

There’s a bit more edge to Alexandrova now.

A service hold to love puts her ahead again and there may just be a bit of belief creeping in that this match is still alive.

More work for the Russian to do but the signs are promising.

*Alexandrova 0-6 1-1 Gauff

10:44 , Mike Jones

Alexandrova’s main problem at the minute is that Gauff is outlasting her in rallies.

The American just isn’t missing and the mistakes are more frequent from Alexandrova.

Very quickly, Gauff is on level terms again in the set.

Alexandrova 0-6 1-0 Gauff*

10:41 , Mike Jones

Is there a way back into the match for Alexandrova? She needs to start again and bring some energy.

This is a good start, two points from her serve and a couple of mistakes from Gauff see her hold serve for the first time in the match.

*Alexandrova 0-6 Gauff - SET!

10:36 , Mike Jones

There’s a bit of resistance from Alexandrova.

She battles her with up to 30-30 before thundering an inside-out forehand right onto the side line to earn a break point.

Gauff is forced onto her backhand again but Alexandrova misses out trying to hook the ball to the opposite side of court.

Deuce.

A double fault from Gauff gives her opponent a second opportunity to break and she misses out again.

Gauff saves a fifth break point then moves to advantage with a forehand down the line. She claims her hold of serve and wins the set.

But, that game may be a sign that Alexandrova has a bit of fight yet to show.

Alexandrova 0-5 Gauff* - BREAK!

10:25 , Mike Jones

The shoulders are sagging already on Ekaterina Alexandrova. She’s looking to her coaches and needs some inspiration.

Coco Gauff is a flurry of speed and power. Alexandrova has switched up and is targeting the backhand of her opponent but Gauff is equally up to the task.

There’s also a steely focus in her eyes that says she’s here to get this job done.

Another break and Gauff is one away from winning the first set.

*Alexandrova 0-4 Gauff

10:21 , Mike Jones

Oof! Gauff unleashes that forehand again and Alexandrova has no answer.

The American is so controlled and accurate with it whether that is heading down the line or rolling her wrists over the ball to play it across court.

On top of that Gauff’s serve is pacey and troubling. This is a true test for Alexandrova.

At 40-0 she begins to target the backhand and gets a point on the board.

But that is it. Another sweeping hold for Gauff.

Alexandrova 0-3 Gauff* - BREAK!

10:18 , Mike Jones

This is better from Alexandrova. She’s settling down and finding a bit of touch.

Gauff is relentless though. Her forehand is doing a lot of heavy lifting and she’s peppering the ball back at her opponent.

Alexandrova hangs in there until 30-30 when Gauff forces her on the defensive. Pushed back behind the baseline, Alexandrova twice goes long and Gauff has a second break in the set.

*Alexandrova 0-2 Gauff

10:15 , Mike Jones

Coco Gauff holds serve without issue. She’s being the more reserved player and focusing on keeping the ball in court.

The mistakes are coming from the other end and the American is happy to accummulate the points so far.

Alexandrova 0-1 Gauff* - BREAK!

10:11 , Mike Jones

The pair are settling nicely into this game.

Both are going for their shots early in this match with some spinning slices and whipped cross court forehands getting the legs and shoulders working early on.

Coco Gauff wins the first couple of points before Alexandrova gets on the board. The Russian then attempts a forehand down the line and pushes it wide.

More errors from Alexandrova help Gauff to an early break of serve. It’ll be a tough match for the Russian today.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Coco Gauff

Alexandrova will serve first in the opening game of the match.
