Cameron Meredith starts Patriots career on training camp PUP list

The New England Patriots picked up free agent wide receiver Cameron Meredith, who was waived by the New Orleans Saints earlier this week. Meredith has struggled to bounce back from a disastrous 2017 knee injury, back when he played for the Chicago Bears, and it’s still dogged him into 2019. It will take him a few days to get up to speed with the Patriots, so they’ve placed him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list while he continues to recover. Meredith’s PUP designation was listed on the official league transactions wire.

He’ll join a number of other injured Patriots wideouts on the sideline, along with Super Bowl hero Julian Edleman (nursing a finger injury) and free agent acquisition Demaryius Thomas (recovering from Achilles surgery). Another star receiver, Josh Gordon, is away from the team serving a league-mandated suspension. Rob Gronkowski replacement (and former Saints tight end) Ben Watson will also start the regular season with a four-game suspension.

All that’s said to say that Meredith will have a wealth of opportunity in front of him, should he finally enjoy a streak of good health. The question has been — and continues to be — how to best manage his injured knee.
