Cameron House's new-look extension is revealed

Cameron House has unveiled a first glimpse of its new-look extension.

The five-star complex is being restored following a devastating fire in December 2017 which killed Simon Midgley, 32, and Richard Dyson, 38, and saw the evacuation of hundreds of people.

A Crown Office investigation into their deaths and is now in its third year, with repeated calls being made by local politicians for answers.

Last week Cameron House bosses revealed work is well underway to reopen the Loch Lomond complex later this year.

A £17.5 million extension will be completed by summer 2021 and will feature a ballroom suitable for weddings or dinners with capacity for 350 guests, as well as a large outdoor terrace on the lower ground floor. It will also have 68 new bedrooms on the upper three floors, the majority of which will feature large balconies with loch-facing views.

Resort director Andy Roger said: “The proposed extension will maximise the stunning views of Loch Lomond whilst fully respecting the architectural integrity of the original house.

“The plans include a new loch-facing ballroom and 68 bedrooms, which will adjoin the hotel’s existing leisure wing. This will bring the resort’s total offering to 208 bedrooms, including 28 spectacular suites.

“The extension will also allow us to increase the number of weddings, functions and guests we’re able to accommodate and we’re confident these improvements will have a significant positive impact on the local economy.”

Lomond Bridge to close for nine months

Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie welcomed the redevelopment of the hotel but said families of the two men who died are still left waiting for answers.

Last month the Lennox Herald told how the politician has been in contact with Jane Midgley, the mother of Simon, who is distraught by the lack of information over how her son died.

She said she is unable to properly grieve for her tragic son as she enters the third year without answers.

Jackie has written to Lord Advocate James Wolffe QC, asking him to meet Jane, who last met investigators around nine months ago.

The MSP said: “Whilst it is very good to see the redevelopment of the hotel and the investment in jobs locally, I hope that the families who lost loved ones in the fire will get the answers they deserve from the Lord Advocate.

“They have been waiting for over two years and I would urge that decisions are now taken without further delay.”

The Crown Office confirmed the investigation is ongoing, commenting: “The nearest relatives will continue to be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.”
