Cameron House blaze questions must be answered three years on

For the past 1000 days, Jane Midgley has thought about Christmas 2017 – the first she had spent without her son Simon.

On December 18 that year, he was killed alongside partner Richard Dyson in the fire at the Cameron House hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond.

In each of those 1000 days, Jane has reached out to take every phone call in the hope that it would be someone explaining why her son died.

But there has been nothing.

Was it suspicious or not? Was someone or something at fault or was it just a tragic accident?

Nobody seems able to give an answer and ease the crippling depression she has been suffering.

The authorities, of course, need time to properly investigate and decide on the most appropriate next steps.

But nearly three years on, a mum doesn’t know why her son was killed and is actually begging First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for help.

That’s not right.

It seems that multiple delays have compounded her misery.

There’s the four months it took fire investigators to get into the building and then the police and fire report that didn’t land on the Crown Office’s desk until March this year.

That was five months ago, yet still nothing.

This needs put right – and shame on the Crown Office if it takes a begging letter to fix it.
