Cameron Harper set for Celtic departure as New York Red Bulls swoop for teenage star

New York Red Bulls have agreed a fee with Celtic to sign Cameron Harper.

The Major League Soccer outfit and the Hoops have thrashed out an undisclosed fee that will see the 19-year-old return to his homeland with immediate effect.

Red Bulls were on the verge of signing Harper on a pre-contract but have managed to do a deal that suits both parties now.

The United States Under-20 cap will now join up with his new teammates before MLS pre-season training starts this month.

It is a blow to Celtic who were keen to keep Harper.

Talks over a new deal had been on-going for several months.

Harper moved to Celtic from Pateadores SC in 2018, after being scouted by Tommy Burns ’s son, Jonny, and was tipped for big things.

The wide man, however, had been concerned about a lack of a pathway to the Celtic first-team and was desperate to get more regular top-level football.

He feels he will get that chance with New York under coach Gerhard Struber.

Harper has only made one first-team appearance and that was against Livingston last month, after 13 players were ruled out with the Covid-19 fallout from the recent trip to Dubai.

The teenager also has international ambitions and knows if he can impress in the MLS then it could open the door for a full US call-up.
