Cameron Carter-Vickers misses Celtic training with RB Leipzig return hopes looking slim

Cameron Carter-Vickers is a major doubt for Celtic ’s meeting with RB Leipzig after he missed training.

The American centre back sat out the weekend’s Premiership win over Motherwell with an unspecified injury as the Hoops survived Callum McGregor’s late sending off to run out 2-1 victors and return to the top of the Scottish Premiership table following Rangers’ earlier 4-0 thumping of Hearts at Tynecastle.

Boss Ange Postecoglou was hopeful that Carter-Vickers would be able to feature in Wednesday night’s Champions League Group F clash in Germany. However, there was no sign of the former Tottenham Hotspur man as the champions trained at Celtic Park ahead of flying out to Leipzig later today. With Swedish international Carl Starfelt also injured, Stephen Welsh and Moritz Jenz deputised against the Steelmen and the same partnership could start at the Red Bull Arena as Celtic seek their first win of the European campaign.

Speaking at the weekend, Postecoglou confirmed that Carter-Vickers would be assessed before a decision was made today at the latest. He said: “He got some treatment again and will get some on Sunday and we will see how he is Monday and Tuesday and make a decision.

“He is not far away but we have another 12 games in 40-odd days so I am not going to put him in unless he is absolutely right because it would be silly of us to put him in and then lose him for another few games, particularly with Carl out for at least another couple of weeks.

“Cam's pretty good, if he is ready he will play and put his hand up, I don't need to question that. But we have got to make sure we make the right decision. We will give him every chance.”
