Cameras to be installed in three Dublin blackspots to catch motorists running red lights

Cameras are to be installed in three city-centre blackspots where motorists - and cyclists - frequently break red lights.

Junctions at Blackhall Place, Con Colbert Road and Queen Street have been identified as areas where motorists and cyclists frequently run red lights.

A pilot camera that was installed where the Luas Red Line crosses Blackhall Place identified 1,300 road users illegally breaking the lights over the course of 18 months.

Councillor Burke says that one simple change to Luas route would 'potentially prevent major hold ups in the future'

More than 700 prosecutions were brought, although several hundred were not pursued because they were cyclists and therefore unidentifiable; camera images were obscured; or vehicle registrations were unidentifiable, reports the Irish Times.

Anyone successfully prosecuted for breaking a red light will receive three penalty points and a fine of up to €120.

The pilot scheme was a joint project between the NTA, An Garda Siochana and Dublin City Council.

The NTA submitted a report to gardai asking that the Blackhall Place camera be kept permanently.

Gardai agreed with this request and recommended that the additional cameras be installed at Con Colbert Road and Queen Street.

Green Party Councillor Ciaran Cuffe called for a rollout of more cameras across the city.

Nine people injured after early morning collision between Luas and bus

He said: “It is very frequent, it is a real problem, particularly for pedestrians who are very vulnerable.

"I see it almost every day, walking, cycling and driving through the city.

"I think we have to up our game in this regard. I think we have to improve compliance. These [cameras] can dramatically improve road safety."

A date for the installation of the additional cameras has not yet been confirmed.
