Cambusnethan Talbot dreaming of cup glory after dramatic semi-final win

Cambusnethan Talbot 2009s are gearing up for a SYFA Scottish Cup final with Gleniffer Thistle after a dramatic 3-2 win over Monifeith.

The Dundee-based visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside 15 minutes before a Jonathan Blair free-kick pulled Talbot back into proceedings before half-time.

Blair completed the comeback for his side before nodding home later in the second half to spark wild scenes after goalkeeper Jamie Hewitt made several saves to keep Monifeith at bay.

It sets up a big occasion at Airdrie’s Penny Cars Stadium next month when they meet Thistle, and local businesses are being asked to get in touch over sponsorship opportunities.

There could be a famous guest in attendance, with Ally McCoist joining in with Gleniffer’s celebrations after their 2-1 semi-final win over Spartans. His son reportedly plays for the club.

Talbot coach Chris Goodfellow said: “The character of these lads... I’ve never seen it in any group I’ve ever been involved in my life.

"A feeling I will never forget and there’s something special about our squad of lads and the blend of coaches we are together.

“Monifeith came down from Dundee to play and got off to a 2-0 start after only 15 mins. ‘Camby’ scored from a free kick taken by Jonathan Blair before half time to bring themselves back into the game.

“They persisted to dominate in early second half pinning their opponents in their own half and scored an equaliser their play deserved. Monifeith seemed spurred on after that and Jamie Hewitt had to make several saves.

“With minutes left, Jacob Campbell from Talbot drove down the left wing. The Monifeith goalie made a save but it popped up in the air for Jonathan Blair and the striker nodded in his hat-trick and set off amazing scenes of celebration with the fans.

“Congratulations again. (We) have been together for seven years with all the lads from the local area of Wishaw and Motherwell.”
