Cambusnethan Boxing Club stars claim Scottish Championship medals

Cambusnethan Boxing Club last month took gold and two silver medals from the Scottish School and Junior Championships at Ravenscraig in Motherwell.

Reece Muir took gold, winning his final against a very good opponent from Sheddocksley ABC in Aberdeen over three rounds.

Aaron ‘Benny’ Bennett won his semi-final convincingly, but lost out in a close decision in his final the following week, against a boxer from Irvine Vineburgh.

Bennett was forced to settle for silver, after the judges gave his opponent the win in a 3-2 split.

Jake Bredin earned silver in only his second bout against a boxer from Fauldhouse ABC, and it proved to be good experience for the youngster, getting back in the ring nearly two years after his first fight.

Cambusnethan ABC also put Emma McCafferty and Mia Pearson forward for the tournament, but they didn’t have opponents.

Gerry Taggart from Cambusnethan Boxing Club was thoroughly impressed with all the youngster’s efforts at the championships.

He said: “The club are extremely proud, after all, the boys have been working extremely hard, preparing for this, and now look forward to the rest of the season.

“Club shows are starting back, and there are several more championships for the club to aim for.

“Reece boxed brilliantly over the three rounds, controlling the pace and distance for the win.

“With Aaron, many thought he did enough to merit the gold, but had to settle for silver.

“Jake had a very close-fought battle against a good wee boxer and it will be valuable experience for him.”

Anyone who is interested in joining the club can find them on Facebook.
