Cambuslang Rugby Club sack coach Alex Donaghy

Cambuslang Rugby Club have ended Alex Donaghy’s two-year spell as manager, following a poor run of results this season.

Former Stirling County and West of Scotland player Gavin Blackburn will take charge, having had coaching experience at Biggar.

A statement issued by Cambuslang president John McLaughlin read: “I would like to thank Alex for all his efforts over the last two years, and wish him the best for the future.

“Gavin seeks to discuss the future vision and aspirations of the team with the players and the committee at the earliest opportunity.

“An era of change is upon us and I look forward to the support and commitment from everyone to bring back winning ways to Coats Park.”

Donaghy said: “Results haven’t been happening this season and I had a meeting with the club on Saturday there.

“I’m disappointed, and a lot of the boys are as well, but I am an employee.

“It’s not like we didn’t have challenges, but the club are thinking outside the box at the moment.

“I have other things I want to try and do, and I hope I’ll be back in rugby soon.”

The club sit bottom of Tennent’s West League 1 and are battling to stay in the division, following a season beset with injury worries and Covid complications, which resulted in their clash at Kilmarnock being postponed.

Donaghy says the club will be playing into May to eat up their backlog.

He said: “Covid is going to cause a lot of call-offs.

“Garnock called off, then we called the second one off because a couple of players were down, but we’re back to it this weekend.

“That’s us going to be playing until the first week of May.”
