Cambuslang Rugby Club face lay-off after being hit hard by weddings and call-offs

Cambuslang Rugby Club will have been idle for three weeks by the time they travel to Lenzie on October 16, after coach Alex Donaghy was in the unusual position of having to request dispensation of their game at home to Irvine due to WEDDINGS.

That comes after Cambuslang were docked three points on Saturday for failing to provide a front row at Stewartry, with a positive Covid test forcing the postponement of their game at home to Kilmarnock the week before.

Donaghy said: “I asked for the game to be called off, because I’ve got eight players at two weddings, which were cancelled through Covid and now fall on the same day.

“We tried looking at the Friday night game down at Irvine but some of the guys work shifts so couldn’t get down there for 6pm.

“That means we won’t have played for three weeks, but guys can recover, any guys with any wee knocks or anything like that, and we need to make sure we have guys fit and ready for the week after.

“At the moment I’ve got 17 players so I’ve got a team.

“We’ll play it no matter what, and if I have to go on the bench I’ll do that to make up the 19.

“The guys know now that if I have to move another couple of games for reasons like that then we could get thrown out the league.

Coach Alex Donaghy says he can't have too many postponement requests and has warned players of the consequences (Alex Donaghy)

“They don’t want that, the club don’t want it, and I don’t want it.

“If they’re going on holiday or can’t make games, they have to give us plenty of notice.”

Donaghy says he tried to get a player from rival clubs for Saturday’s game, but was out of luck.

He said: “I’ve got four props that are sufficient for 1st XV but three were out, and I tried Hamilton, Cartha, GHA and Whitecraigs to see if I could get a prop and I couldn’t get one.

“We’re not allowed to take one from someone in the same league as us.

“We need to work things out so we can have more players.”

Cambuslang are still waiting to learn the outcome of their appeal against their opening day defeat at Strathendrick.

Their opponents, who used seven subs due to a mix-up, have appealed against any sanctions.
