Cambuslang Rangers star "phenomenal" in five-goal display

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell was thrilled to see “phenomenal” Scott Anson turn in a five-star display on his return to the forward line for their thumping win over Ardeer Thistle.

Anson netted five goals in Camby’s 7-0 triumph at Somervell Park on Saturday to maintain their four-point lead over St Cadoc’s at the top of Conference B in the West of Scotland League, with Callum McLean and Jay Nelson also on target.

The 32-year-old had been helping out at the back for Camby in recent games, contributing to the club embarking on a club record-equalling run of seven consecutive clean sheets.

But he was thrust back into his natural position on Saturday and it paid huge dividends with a fine display of finishing.

Campbell, whose side were only 1-0 up at half-time, said: “We are really pleased with win.

Scott Anson (20) is mobbed by his team-mates during the win over Ardeer (Cambuslang Rangers)

”Second half we raised our game significantly with some of the deliveries and some of the balls in the last third.

”Scott Anson, in particular, was great. Five goals at this level is tremendous.

“To be fair to him, he’s been helping us out at the back for a bit and he’s been great there but we are pleased for him to get a wee return up front - and he delivers five goals.

”It was a phenomenal sight.

“There were two great finishes from young Jay and Callum as well, so it was a really good day for us.”

Campbell also had praise for former St Johnstone and Airdrie striker Keigan Parker, who has come on board in a player/coaching role.

”I’d like to give Keigan Parker some recognition as well,” Campbell added.

“He’s been working the boys really hard on a Monday night in terms of maintaining their fitness.

”The fitness levels that we are showing in the second half of games have been a real help to us this season.”

Cambuslang now head to second bottom Dalry Thistle on Saturday where they will be big favourites to run out winners once again.

Dalry have picked up just two wins from 19 games so far this season, but Campbell isn’t taking anything for granted after they ran 10th place Ashfield close in a 3-2 defeat at the weekend.

He said: “Dalry had a right tough game at Ashfield on Saturday, so they will be pushing to make it difficult for us. The first challenge is to go and get a win and anything on top of that is a bonus.”

Kick-off at Dalry’s Merksworth Park is 1.30pm.
