Cambuslang Rangers hero's wonder strike beats pal - and won't let him forget it

Tony Stevenson bagged a wonder goal from inside his own half to help sink Larkhall Thistle – and he won’t let Cambuslang goalkeeper and team-mate Fermin Jiminez forget it.

Jiminez is on loan from Camby at Thistle and he was the unfortunate victim of Stevenson’s magic, as the midfielder beat him from distance during a thumping 6-1 win at Gasworks Park on Saturday.

It was one of two strikes for the man of the match in the West of Scotland League Cup first round victory, which also saw Cambuslang pass 100 goals for the season so far.

And the 33-year-old former Hamilton and Clyde star said: “I was just inside my own half. I saw big Fermin clear it on the edge of his box and it came straight towards me.

“It was in my mind straight away that I was going to try it. The game was nearly finished and we were 4-1 up at the time so I just thought why not?

“I probably wouldn’t have tried it at 0-0.

“Fermin is on loan from Cambuslang and I used to travel with him when he was playing for us as well, so I won’t let him forget about this.

Stevenson scored twice against Larkhall Thistle (Cambuslang Rangers FC)

“I think I only got man of the match because of the goal, to be honest. But it’s just pleasing to get the win and man of the match is just a wee bonus.”

Attention now returns to league business as Camby look to end the year by maintaining their strong lead at the top of West of Scotland League Conference B.

They travel to Renfrew on Saturday bidding to keep their six point lead over nearest rivals St Cadoc’s intact to go into 2022 on a high.

Stevenson added: “We’ve got a big game with Renfrew coming up this weekend. We beat them at the start of the season with 10 men, but it was a difficult game for us. It was impressive that we managed to win that but they’ve picked up from the last time we played them.

“We don’t fear anyone. We’ll give them the respect they are due and hopefully we do enough to end the year with a win and keep our gap at the top of the table.

“We aren’t ones for saying too much. Although we’ve been top for most of the season, we’ve not won anything yet.

“The boys just keep our feet on the ground and go game to game. We were beaten in the first game of the season so we’ll just keep doing what we’ve been doing and see where it takes us.”
