Cambuslang Rangers co-boss praises striker John Gemmell for hitting 90-goal landmark

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell heaped praise on veteran striker John Gemmell after he hit his 90th goal at Junior/West of Scotland League level.

The former Albion Rovers and Clyde striker Gemmell - nicknamed 'The Beast' - helped Camby to a 3-0 win over Ashfield on Saturday to net the landmark strike after 137 appearances over six seasons across the former 'Junior' setup and the new West of Scotland League, encompassing spells at Hurlford, Arthurlie, Troon and two stints at Somervell Park.

The 37-year-old's effort rounded off the win after a Scott Anson header and an own goal - all in the second half - kept Camby top of the pile in West of Scotland League Conference B.

And Campbell revealed his striker has his sights firmly set on a century.

He said: "John is a player of good stature to have in your team.

"He's telling us he is pushing 100 goals and wants to get there by the end of the season.

"That remains to be seen but 90 at this level is tremendous.

"He's been in the team on off due suspensions and injuries, which you tend to get as you get older.

"He was struggling a bit with a calf injury and we did a bit of work on him before the game so he could play, because he's an important player for us.

"It's great for him to get that goal and we are all pleased for him."

Camby were made to work for their 14th win in 16 games this season, as Ashfield kept them at bay in the first half.

Campbell admitted his side were fortunate to be level at the break after a difficult first 45 minutes in difficult conditions, but his players responded to his half-time team-talk to stay four points clear of St Cadoc's at the summit.

"We are very pleased with the win," Campbell added.

"The weather conditions were terrible; driving wind and rain made it difficult.

"Ashfield dealt with the conditions in the first half better than we did, played very well and were a bit unlucky not to be ahead.

"We needed to change things and had a chat at half-time, covered off a couple of areas, and we applied ourselves better in the second half.

"We hit the woodwork a couple of times before the initial goal and I was really pleased with the reaction we got.

"Ashfield is a small, tight park so it's always a difficult place to go, but the boys went out and delivered."

On Saturday Campbell's men face a Lanarkshire derby against a Newmains United side who were hammered 11-0 away to Thorniewood United.

However, he says Camby won't be taking anything for granted.

Campbell added: "They had a wee bit of a struggle and credit to Thorniewood for that result as, because that's a phenomenal win.

"But I think Newmains had four or five starters missing. I know what it's like when you lose a few of your starters at this level, you end up struggling and I know they've brought some young lads in to help.

"I think they were up against it.

"But we will treat them with full respect when they come to us on Saturday.

"We are trying to maintain the lead we've got at the top of the table and keep the team driving on.

"This time of year is tough with games being off, games being rescheduled and the parks are heavy, so you just need to dig in.

"We've got good experience in our team and guys that play with no fear so our guys know what is required and what the demands of the club are."
