Cambuslang mum becomes TikTok sensation

TikTok might be beloved by teenagers and used by hordes of celebrities – but one Cambuslang woman has found herself a hit on it too.

Mum-of-three Jules Spence has been uploading comedy videos to the social media platform since the coronavirus pandemic started and has had hundreds of thousands of views as a result.

Her daft antics have seen her have a laugh at many of the pitfalls of lockdown life, from panic that the schools could be set to shut again to the differences between her aspirations at the start of the shutdown and the actual, less glamorous, reality.

They have proved popular online, with one of her videos clocking up a whopping 80,000 views.

And Jules, who works as a marketing manager in her day job, is happy she’s putting some smiles on faces.

She told the Reformer : “I only joined TikTok because my kids were using it, and I wanted to keep an eye on them and the platform.

“I just got hooked on it though, and started doing my own wee videos, just things to make me or my pals laugh.

“Then they got shared on Facebook, and Alex Black on the All About Cambuslang group asked me to join there as an admin, and share my videos there too.

“It really took off from there.

“It’s a hard time for a lot of people right now and it’s about doing what you can to find a bit of fun in things.”

Some of her most popular clips include her reaction to a possible second closure of schools, with a quick cut to her packing a suitcase and racing off down the street.

Another favourite shows her in tears after her husband Dave returned with store bought Diet Coke as opposed to the official brand.

She laughed: “I guess part of it is trying to make fun of the fears that we are all having.

“A lot of social media can be false, and showing people pretending everything is amazing, while this is much more about what people probably actually are doing!

“It’s been really nice because I’ve had loads of messages saying you’re making us laugh, or I’ve had people saying ‘thank goodness it’s not just me thinking that’ or ‘ I’ve had a bad day and that’s cheered me up’.

“It’s not going to solve anyone’s problems, but if making silly videos helps people then brilliant.”

It’s also earned Jules some cool points with her three kids – Jamie, 13, Poppy, 10, and Ellie, seven.

She added: “I think it’s got me some cool mum points now, but they were absolutely cringing about it all at first! It’s a mixture of both feelings from them now.”
