Cambuslang kids encouraged to recycle and litter pick for COP26 conference

Kids in Cambuslang are being encouraged to get litter picking ahead of the COP 26 climate change conference in Glasgow later this year

World leaders are expected to attend the summit, which starts on October 31 and will run until November 12 at the SEC.

That prompted eco-friendly locals to start thinking what they could in the run-up to the conference, and they hit upon the idea of asking every school in Cambuslang, both at primary and secondary level, to try and fill 26 bags of rubbish over 26 days.

The has been greeted enthusiastically by the schools, and the initiative gets underway this week.

Liisa Hepworth, of the Cleaning Up Cambuslang group, was among those involved in setting up the project.

She told Lanarkshire Live: "Suzy McDougall that's in the group had suggested doing something to tie in with COP26, and we wanted something to get the schools engaged. Fly tipping and litter dumping is something that's a big issue in Cambuslang and it's got worse since lockdown.

"There's a lot of people who want to do something in the area and we just want kids and young people to be educated.

"We wrote to all the teachers and South Lanarkshire Council to ask if they were interested, and got a really positive response with everyone getting involved.

"We've supplied them with litter bags and litter pickers and it's exactly as the name suggests - the bags can be filled each day by pupils picking up waste and rubbish from around the school grounds. Basically, let's get Cambuslang looking spick and span.

"There's going to be so much attention on Glasgow so hopefully we can carry that into Cambuslang as well.

Cleaning Up Cambuslang is a joint initiative run by both Cambuslang community council and Halfway community council.

The group already has hundreds of members, all trying their best to make the area a tidier place.

If each school fills every bag then a total of 286 bags would be filled up, with pupils also being encouraged to share their efforts on social media.

The COP 26 conference is expected to feature countries across the world outlining what further actions they will take to combat climate change.
