Cambuslang Harriers runners take medals at home and abroad

Cambuslang Harriers athletes have done well in competitions in Germany, Scotland and Northern Ireland recently.

Events have included the European Triathlon and Athletics Championships in Munich, the Scottish Under-17 and Senior Track Championships in Aberdeen, Scottish National Mid-Distance Triathlon Championships in Aberfeldy, Antrim Half Marathon and various local road races.

Grant Sheldon was reinstated into the World’s Top 100 rankings as he finished 15th and first GB finisher at the European Triathlon event, months after finishing fifth at the Commonwealth Games.

Harriers runner Moira Stewart, representing the Czech Republic, finished her latest marathon in 2.43.03, having been alongside the leaders up to 25km.

There was bronze medal success for Eve and Jamie Mackinnon (not related) over senior 5000m and 1500m events at the Scottish Track Championships in Aberdeen.

Chris McLew ended his track season at Trafford, Manchester, where he lowered his 800m pb to 1.51.84.

M50 Mark Gallacher represented Scottish Masters in the Inter Area Match over 1500m and 3000m, achieving a pb at the shorter distance.

Prolific Scottish triathlon medallist Kirsty O’Brien added four more Scottish medals when finishing first W35 and third overall at the Scottish Sprint Triathlon Championships, before winning double silver in her age group and overall at the Scottish Mid-Distance Triathlon Championships.

James Smith won silver in the M30-34 category.

Fraser Stewart and Mike Christoforou both recorded pb times at the Antrim Half-Marathon, with debutant Stewart clocking 66.22.5, while Mike ran 67.04.9.

M40 Stuart McGeachy and Lesley Blackwood were the male and female winners in the Dunoon 10k. Ian Hodge was third male finisher, and Veronica Connochie also took part.

Third-paced Kieran Cooper, Stuart Gibson, Ian Hodge and leading M50 Richard Cooper won the team award at the Irvine 10k, with Chris Upson second M50 runner.

The ladies’ team of Georgia Freeman Mills, Erica Christie and Julie Reid were runners up in the Paisley 10k, where Gordon Robertson scooped the M40 award and Mark King was second-placed M50.

Chris Upson won the M50 prize at the Bute 10k. Bellahouston 10k and Canal Canter 9k, where he finished third overall. Erica Christie was first lady super vet at the Canal event, Lesley Blackwood was runner-up lady, and Iain Hodge was second over the shorter 6k distance.

Georgia Freeman-Mills was third at the Bellahouston 10k, and Mark King was runner-up to Chris Upson in the M50 category.

Erica Christie was first W65 in the 3k on the Green. M60 Dave Thom, M50 Mick O’Hagan and M70 Peter Ogden were respectively first in their age groups. M65 Sandy Eaglesham was second, and senior Rachel Wardrope and M50 Iain Crawford secured third age group placings.

Kerry-Liam Wilson, Euan Duernberger, Iain McDonald, Steven Fitzpatrick, Carole Setchell, Paula McCabe, Richard Cooper, Mick O’Hagan, Fraser Stewart, Ian Hodge, Gabriel Murphy, Brendan Carey, Lewis Roddis, Michael Barker and Alasdair Campbell have all won recent Parkruns.

A team of 49 took part in the Drumpellier Parkrun, prior to a barbecue at the club’s Coates Park base. Cambuslang provided 11 of the first 13 finishers, with pbs set by winner Lewis Roddis, Finlay Robb, Chris Black, Ewan Kennedy, Emma Ritchie and Lucy McGrandle.

U18 Millie Nicholl and U11 Ewan Kennedy set course age group records.

Jennifer Campbell finished third lady overall and first W50 at the Speyside Way Ultra, which covers 35.5 miles and climbs of 2133 feet.
