Cambuslang Harriers ended their winter season in style, with a bronze individual medal, team gold, and another senior team bronze for a university side.
Under-17 runner Millie Nicholl took bronze at the Scottish Young Athletes’ Road Championships, while the M50 team of Mark Gallacher, Chris Upson, Richard Cooper and Kerry-Liam Wilson won team gold at the Seniors and Masters Road Relay Championships.
Andre Carey picked up a bronze senior team medal in the colours of Glasgow University, while Cameron Smith helped Notts AC to victory in the Midlands 12-Stage Road Relay Championships, clocking the fourth-fastest long stage.
Owen Walpole, who has recently returned to Scotland, played his part in Sunderland taking ninth place in the Northern 12 Stage.
Pride of place for the club goes to Millie Nicholl, who won under-17 bronze in the 5k, held on a fast, flat course in Greenock.
Her new personal best time by 57 seconds of 17.48 puts her third in the Scottish and UK rankings for her age category.
Eilidh Kennedy also set a personal best, lowering her time to 21.57, while under-17 men Lewis Roddis and Finlay Robb significantly reduced their PB times to 16.15 and 16.57, respectively.
Olivia McNicol registered the competitive time of 15.55 in the U15 girls’ 4k, while her male age counterpart Sam McCarthy, in 13.47, led his club mates Chris Black, Gavin Kelly, Lewis Cook and Gabriel Murphy to fifth place in the team competition.
The under-13 girls’ trio of Emma Ritchie, Erin Kearney and Megan O’Brien finished ninth.
Cambuslang Harriers’ senior men and women, and masters men, enjoyed unseasonably warm temperatures for the National Road Relays at Livingston.
The M50 event was a closely-fought contest between defending champions Cumbernauld, cross country champions Perth Road Runners, Corstorphine and Cambuslang.
However, with Mark Gallacher and Richard Cooper recording the two fastest times on the short circuit, Kerry-Liam Wilson being the quickest on the long route, and Chris Upson putting in an impressive performance, the club secured a 15-seconds victory over Perth, with Cumbernauld a further 21 seconds adrift.
Since the M50 team award was created in 2013, Harriers have won six gold medals, one silver and a bronze in eight competitions.
Paul Thompson, now in the M65 category, ran 19.03 in his first race since winning the Antarctica half-marathon in February.
The M40 team of Brian Douglas, George Pettit, Kevin Newberry, Gordon Robertson, Ian Nicholl and Justin Carter narrowly missed lost out to Gala Harriers for the bronze medal position.
With several under-20 and senior men unavailable, Cambuslang were out of the mix for a podium place, but the team of Kevan Harvey, Richie Carr, Fraser Stewart, Colin Reilly, Shaun Butler and Stuart Gibson finished 14th.
Harriers’ senior ladies’ team of Catriona Bain, Lesley Blackwood, Paula McCabe and Kirsty O’Brien finished 10th, the second-highest position ever achieved by the club.
