Cambuslang gym owner raises over £1200 for local foodbank

A Cambuslang gym owner has raised a four-figure sum for charity by taking part in a 24-hour cycle event.

Chris Allen of Energie Fitness Cambuslang took part in the spinathon from Friday into Saturday in aid of Rutherglen and Cambuslang foodbank and broadcast his efforts live from his house.

Chris told the Reformer : “I met the foodbank committee about three weeks ago to see if there was anything we could do to help them.

“The foodbank is under huge demand and because of the pandemic, they have struggled to fundraise while demand for their services has sky-rocketed.

“People of all walks of life are now using it and the shelves are a bit bare.

“I decided on a 24-hour spinathon in my conservatory to raise as much cash as possible.

“Every penny raised will go directly to the foodbank.”

Following his marathon ride, Chris was delighted with his efforts and the generosity of those who donated. During the event, he cycled an incredible 340 miles, burned 5700 calories and raised more than £1200.

Chris posted online: “I am delighted to say I am finished.

“Thanks you so much to everyone has donated.

“Also, a huge thanks to everyone who left a comment on Facebook or jumped on Zoom and chatted with me.

“It was a massive help passing the time.

“All the money raised will be donated to Rutherglen and Cambuslang foodbank.

“We will be heading to Morrisons to buy lots of food and supplies. Morrison’s have kindly given 15 per
cent discount on our big shop.

“I am blown away by the money we raised considering how difficult the last year has been.”

Following Chris’s efforts, the Foodbank team showed their appreciation online and posted: “Absolutely amazing effort.

“Thank you so much – your support is so appreciated and money raised will go a long way to helping those in need in our local community.

“Enjoy a well-earned rest tonight.”
