Cambuslang councillor Katy Loudon unsuccessful in bid for Holyrood opportunity

A Cambuslang councillor has failed in her bid for an opportunity to win a Holyrood seat next year.

Katy Loudon, who represents the SNP in Cambuslang East, had  hoped to be selected as the party’s candidate for the Glasgow Shettleston seat next year.

However, party members have instead plumped for the incumbent, John Mason.

On Twitter Ms Loudon wrote: “It wasn’t meant to be for me this time, but thanks to Shettleston members for their support, chat, and friendship.

“Thanks to @valentinasercla and @JohnMasonMSP for keeping it friendly, and congrats to John. Onwards – we’ve got work to do!”

Mr Mason, who has held the seat since 2011, said: “Very grateful to  the SNP members of Glasgow Shettleston for re-selecting me as their candidate in next May’s election.

“Very much appreciated. We have a great team of workers. Looking forward to the coming campaign.” Mr Mason has proved a controversial figure, including within his own party.

The gaffe-prone MSP has previously spoken in support of creationism, called for abortion to be restricted and earlier this year kept his parliamentary office open as the coronavirus pandemic started to spread.
