Cambuslang chippy does their bit to raise Cash for Kids this Christmas

Hats off to Cambuslang’s very own frying squad, whose generosity and that of their customers helped kids in the west of Scotland have a happier Christmas.

Brothers Steven and Mark Simpson, who own The Kraken Chippy in Whitlawburn, proved they are Christmas crackers when they and their hard-working team offered suppers for only £2 in a fundraising evening in aid of Clyde 1’s Mission Christmas Cash for Kids appeal.

Fish ’n’ chips lovers queued in droves last Tuesday evening for a super supper at a knockdown price.

The Kraken Chippy prepared and sold more than 800 meals on the evening, which amounted to sales and donations totalling £2182.

Not only did big-hearted brothers Steven and Mark meet the cost of the stock, they also rounded up the total to £2500 for Cash for Kids.

When the shutters were down, floors mopped and cash counted, the pair said a massive thank you to the staff
for putting in their shifts – and to everyone who turned out to support the cause.

When the grand total of this latest gesture was announced, supporters of the Kraken Chippy took to social media in their hundreds to congratulate the fast food outlet for its kind gesture.

Brian Sims said: “That is truly amazing. Congratulations and well done to all involved. The best chippy in South Lanarkshire in more ways than one. Proud to be a regular customer.”

Karen Brannigan posted: “Amazing community spirit you have shown all year, well done.”

And Alana MacNaughton wrote: “Well done! What an amazing thing to do!”

It’s not the first time The Kraken Chippy has gone the extra mile in support of members of the local community.

At the height of lockdown, the brothers and their team joined other local businesses in responding to a swell of community support for elderly and vulnerable people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang who were struggling in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

They announced in April that they were once again taking orders from the elderly, people in need, and those who couldn’t get out, and would be delivering free-of-charge suppers to their homes in a generous meals on wheels offer.

If that wasn’t enough, Kraken Chippy team member Cameron Rutherford – who played Santa on the evening of the Cash for Kids fundraiser – gave up his turkey and all the trimmings to walk on Christmas Day from George Square to Loch Lomond in a kilt.

Not to be beaten when the annual Kilt Walk was cancelled due to COVID, Cameron set off on his one-man mission on Friday to raise cash for St Andrew’s Hospice.

To add to his total so far of £420, donate to Cameron’s Cammy’s Christmas Day Kilt Walk page at Justgiving.com

- Cameron’s thanks go to A1 Kilt Hire for donating his kilt and accessories, to Trespass Hamilton for providing a discount on a cosy jacket and bag, and to driver Stuart Drummond of Wright Taxis who donated the fare from Loch Lomond to Dalreoch Rail Station, where he’d left his car.r
